BIOBUZZ Season Explanation
BIOBUZZ is the new game for this FIRST Tech Challenge season. The game FIELD has a frame with two HIVES in the middle and 4 FLOWERS near the walls and. The team scores POINTS by putting game pieces into the HIVE CELLS and the FLOWERS.
The table below shows all the Game ELEMENTS and areas on the FIELD. This will help you see what they look like and know the difference between them.
GAME ELEMENT or ZONE Description
POLLEN 40 yellow plastic balls (7.1 cm diameter) for everyone to use
NECTAR 8 red + 8 blue plastic balls (9.1 cm diameter). Each ALLIANCE has its own color.
HIVE Two structures in the center of the FIELD. Each HIVE has two transparent boxes called CELLS. It sits tilted to one side. When enough POLLEN/NECTAR are LAUNCHED into the higher CELL, then it tips to the other side.
FLOWERS Four tall tubes attached to the FIELD walls. You drop POLLEN and NECTAR into the top opening. You can take out POLLEN from the bottom. NECTAR stays inside once you put it in.
GARDEN Two short lines, red and blue in the opposite corners of the FIELD
LOADING ZONE Small taped rectangles near the FIELD wall. Teams use them to PARK their ROBOTS and add NECTAR to the game
The table below lists the tasks that give you POINTS in a BIOBUZZ MATCH.
SCORING ACTIONS Description
LEAVE ROBOT must no longer touch the FIELD wall by the end of AUTO.
PARK ROBOT is at least partially in the LOADING ZONE at the end of AUTO and/or TELEOP.
HIVE TIP The higher CELL goes down and becomes the lower CELL. Counted as TIP when the damper on the HIVE contacts the frame.
Bottom NECTAR ALLIANCE NECTAR must be at the lowest position in the FLOWER at the end of TELEOP.
Own a FLOWER ALLIANCE NECTAR must be in the highest position in the FLOWER at the end of TELEOP.
POLLEN/NECTAR in the GARDEN POLLEN or NECTAR must be in the ALLIANCE GARDEN at the end of TELEOP.
Doing tasks in the game gives you two types of POINTS: MATCH Points and RANKING POINTS.
  • MATCH Points are the points you earn during the game, and the team with the most MATCH Points wins the MATCH.

  • RANKING POINTS decide your overall rank in the tournament. You earn RANKING POINTS by winning MATCHES and by completing special task combinations.
