FIRST is offering three main programs which are designed to engage students at every level. Children can join any of three programs based on age or grade:
FIRST® LEGO® League offers age-appropriate STEM experiences for kids ages 5-16 through playful robotics and team-based learning by using LEGO® technology. Materials help guide coaches, educators, and students through a series of sessions centered around a yearly theme. The program can be run as a small team or in a classroom-like environment. FIRST® Tech Challenge students (ages 12-18) work together with their mentors to design and build dynamic robots to compete in an exciting game released every September. On and off the field, students develop STEM skills, engage in community outreach, practice engineering innovation, and build confidence to help them succeed. Find out more
Starting with a Kit of Parts, teams of high school students (ages 14-18)design, program, and build industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed game, released in January. They compete on a themed field as part of a three-team alliance. More details here

WHY FIRST?
Why do we choose FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC)?
Real, iterative engineering
It is a full-season engineering experience. Students build, test, analyze failures, redesign, and continuously improve their robots — just like professional engineers.
Flexible for schools
Season follows the academic year, with new game rules announced in September. It can be integrated into technology or computer science classes, or run as an after-school club.
Unique Competition Format
FTC uses an alliance-based format, where two competing teams work together. Success depends on teamwork, strategy, adaptability, and trust.
Connects learning to real life
Students apply physics, mathematics, geometry, and programming to build and control real robots, turning classroom theory into practical skills.
A large international community
FTC connects teams in 60+ countries. Teams share ideas and support each other, helping beginners feel welcome.
A community beyond graduation
Many alumni return as mentors, volunteers, and event organizers, supporting the next generation of teams.
Accessible for beginners — limitless for advanced students
No prior experience is needed. Students contribute through design, coding, strategy, documentation, and teamwork.
Valuable for student's future
FTC is recognized by universities and industry. Students build strong portfolios and gain access to STEM scholarship opportunities worldwide.
